The reed diffuser base oil is specially formulated to be designed to work with most fragrance and essential oils, however, very thick fragrance oils do not work well in reed diffusers. The exact ingredients are proprietary and the manufacturer is guarding the secret well. All they will tell me is that it doesn’t contain any Dipropylene Glycol (DPG), as that would make the base oil to viscous and would hinder the fragrance from wicking up the reeds.

The average mix ratio is 20-40% fragrance oil to 60-80% reed diffuser base oil. Just like when making soap and candles you need to take into consideration that fragrance oils vary in strength and some fragrances naturally have a stronger throw than others. You may also need to add more or less depending on the size of the room you intend to use the diffuser in. With thick fragrances, such as most vanillas, you should only use a 20% fragrance to 80% diffuser base oil ratio.

I personally have had great success with an average ratio of one part fragrance oil to two parts of the unscented diffuser base. You can then adjust your ratio as necessary. It may take a little experimentation to find the correct proportions to produce the results you desire, but that’s half the fun!

Please Note: Although the base oil works with most fragrance and essential oils there are the odd exceptions and these could cause the mix to separate so make sure you test any fragrances in small batches first.
